Yuleba
60 km east of Roma, Yuleba (http://queenslandplaces.com.au/yuleba) has at least two sites of significance to Aboriginal people. Mandandanji people advise that the old Yuleba sawmill site was a large corroboree site, along an Aboriginal trade route that also ran to the Bunya Mountains. At that time, there would have been large ceremonial gatherings, with many people camping and exchanging goods.
Yuleba in Mandandanji language means ‘water lilies’, and Judd’s Lagoon is famous for its beautiful water lilies and an abundance of birds and animal life. It is a large, peaceful, permanent body of water, which was historically an important meeting, fishing and hunting place for Aboriginal people. The beauty of the place makes it easy to imagine Aboriginal people gathering here over generations. The Lagoon was once known for its mineral mud baths, a therapy that Aboriginal people knew of long before non-Indigenous people learned of the benefits of such baths and the tourism dollars to be made from them. There are however a number of scarred trees in the area, and other signs of its former use before white settlement. Free camping and good facilities make this a popular stopover for travellers today.

Yuleba Rock Wells picnic area

Located 15km south of Yuleba along the Cobb & Co Way, the rock wells at Yuleba are testament to the ingenuity, skill and knowledge of the Traditional Owners who were able to construct a series of stone wells that filter rainwater through 3 crafted stone holding basins to supply clean drinking water in a dry area. To dig the wells through solid rock, a fire was first lit on top of the rock to heat it before the process of cutting and chipping began.
At the site of the rock wells, visitors today will also find a shaded picnic area, barbeque, water tank and toilet.
